Scanning computer for missing patches involves several important subtasks:

First, PSA loads patches definition file (mssecure.xml) from Microsoft web site.

Next, the program analyzes the system and determines which products are installed and retrieves the list of security bulletins and patches associated with each product.

Finally, every security bulletin is evaluated and marked as installed, missing or note. This information is stored in the internal program's database (XML file under the History folder) and shown in the main program window.

Patches defenition file contains information about all officially released security bulletins and patches, and updated on a regular basis. So the program checks for the updated version of mssecure.xml file every time when it is started, and if newer version is available, it is downloaded automatically.
